Celtic Shamanism

Remembering the Òran Mór • The Great Song of the Earth

What we call ‘Celtic Shamanism’ is the modern practice of remembering, honoring, and walking the deep animist paths of the ancient peoples of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and England.

The root of the word Celtic comes from ‘Keltoi’ and describes a magnificent, interconnected tapestry of tribes that emerged in Central Europe around 1500 BCE. They eventually spread their fierce, artistic, and inherently curious culture from the salt mines of Germany to the jagged cliffs of the Atlantic Ocean.

As these ancient people migrated across the landscape, they did not just occupy territory—they listened to it, letting the land tell the stories it longed to tell through their daily lives. They understood the innate wisdom held within the Earth and its elements, and their spiritual experiences and expressions were continuously shaped by this raw magic. They interwove their own stories and lives with those of the land, the sky, and the sea, embodying a profound way of seeing reality that survived the arrival of Christianity and still pulses with intelligence within our own cells, and certainly the Earth’s fertile ground, today.

The Core Weaver: An Interconnected Reality

At the heart of Celtic consciousness lies the unwavering understanding of Core Shamanism: everything is imbued with spirit, and all of life is interconnected—quite like the non-dual Tantrikas! To the Celtic mind, the unseen world—the Otherworld—is not a distant heaven. It is a luminous, breathing reality that permeates, enlivens, and dances directly alongside our physical, everyday lives.

The ancient Celts were master observers and deep listeners of the natural world. They recognized the inherent intelligence pulsing in every river, stone, tree, and whisper of wind. This wisdom required a state of radical presence—living fully in the immediate medicine of what is right now.

One ancient Celtic myth proclaims, “The greatest music of all is the music of what is happening.”

Archetypes of the Lineage

In the Gaelic tradition, there is no single word that captures the wide spectrum of the shamanic archetype. Instead, the community relied on a beautiful, diverse circle of specialized practitioners who walked between the worlds to secure healing, protection, and wisdom.

I honor and work directly with a number of ancient archetypal energetic footprints in my practice, including the Healing Mothers, The Faerie Doctors, the Psychopomp, to name a few.

The Daily Ritual of Reverence

To walk this path is to return to the Òran Mór—the Great Song of Creation. The Celts recognized that conscious acts of gratitude connected them more deeply with the divinity in Nature.

Daily life was treated as an ongoing ceremony of prayerfulness: greeting the rising sun, thanking the fire for the morning meal, praising the earth for its sustenance, and smooring the hearth-ashes at nighttime with a breath of thanksgiving.
