Late Summer’s Last New Moon Brings Integration with a Hint of Interlude
The Virgo New Moon takes place at 18° 45’ on Thursday, September 10th 8:27 pm Pacific and at 11:27 pm Eastern.
Cool air weaves its refreshing threads into the seasonal mix, prickling our skin in the spaces between day and night, carrying the first traces of Autumn with it. The light has shifted, its warm glow a bit more muted as it touches the first changing leaves, their edges turning from bright green to gold before floating languorously to the ground. A dampness has returned—thank the goddess—the earth growing moisture-laden as it clings to the much-needed nourishment it and we have so longed for.
The Virgo New Moon greets us as the last new moon of Summer, just in the sliver of our transition to Autumn. After two powerful eclipses and a fierce astrological tapestry in the Fire and Air signs, we are welcomed to a grounding threshold that seeks to hold us more than anything else. Giving us a heartening respite following the intensity from which we’ve emerged, this moon brings an anchoring energy to the fore.
Virgo claims its space through its craft and skill, letting these speak for themselves without the need to announce itself at all, for its work does all the talking. This sign of the zodiac is most interested in growth and evolution, willing to put itself into the ring over and again to improve its technique and refine its gifts, knowing that this is the only way to the perfection it seeks. Yet the Analyst and the Servant to Humanity need not become enamored with an unattainable perfection—but instead with the recognition that in honing and refining its offerings through continual devotion, it eventually becomes the thing it once thought unattainable. It embodies what long ago it once desired.
Daily rituals and meaningful tasks are the fodder with which Virgo is so fascinated, for in pouring itself into these with purpose and precision, the Helper grows more encouraged and contented. With an eye for the meticulous and an ear for the articulate, Virgo moves through life with a refined awareness that is most fulfilled when the work reveals itself through time, and when deliberate progress on the path is made. “The journey of a thousand steps begins with the first,” and Virgo is aware of each and every step, learning not just to count them, but to make them count, each one giving way to the next, as well as the process of its own great evolution. In this journey, it embodies the excellency for which it stands, becoming the master of that which inspires it most.
Here, we are invited to attune ourselves to the shifting rhythms of life, creating the daily, weekly, and monthly structures that support our overall well-being—and certainly our sanity after all that has come before. All the organization we feel called to will serve us well as we set up the systems that support our being and our becoming, and tend to them as they require. In this space, we find the rhythms and routines that nurture our lives and what we’re cultivating within them, including where we’d like to grow and evolve, placing our precious time, energy, and attention into these arenas so that we see real results as we do. We are beckoned to create a clear method and an organized approach as to how we actualize ourselves in this phase of our becoming, if only so we cultivate the results we know will fulfill us.
Here, too, we are called to remember our innate worth and worthiness, to claim our value within so that we don’t give ourselves away in the tasks at hand. The Sanskrit word ‘purnatva’ can be translated as, ‘perfection,’ or ‘wholeness,’ ‘fullness,’ and it refers to our nature which is already all of the above. We are encouraged to know this inherent goodness that has nothing to do with how productive we are, how much we do, or how many times we’ve climbed/biked/skied the mountain. In fact, this facet of who we are is always there, the nature that comes in with us and will leave with us too. Remembering and deepening our relationship with this facet of our being keeps us from outsourcing our worth to others, allowing us to be clear in what we’re offering without giving ourselves away in the process.
Mars in Cancer sextiles this New Moon, encouraging us to fiercely claim a boundary when it comes to the self-care and ‘healing through feeling’ practices that the sign of the Healer requires. It reminds us that without the necessary time and space for nourishing practices and rituals, the routine becomes dull and brittle, and a part of us will want to check out before fully checking in. Boldly affirming the people who support us in our lives and our evolution only helps us grow into our most clear and sovereign selves, and if we continue giving our energy to those who don’t value it, we grow depleted and resentful, exhausted at the things that could actually bring deep and real contentment.
Saturn in Aries inconjuncts (or forms a quincunx with) this New Moon, reminding us that healthy boundaries which may seem selfish to some (including us) keep us from giving ourselves away. Having integrity requires placing clear limits on our time, energy, and attention, especially when we are often tasking, refining our gifts to share them with others, and honing our crafts to be of use. Father Time welcomes us to pull back when we need, to be fierce in our output when it’s time, and to trust our impulses when they are aligned with the skills we are bringing to life. Otherwise, we may grow embittered and frustrated, our nervous systems feeling tweaked or misaligned in ways that keep us from operating at our potential.
May this Virgo New Moon provide the exhale you need as we shift from the intensity of Summer. May you create the structures and dial the systems that keep you connected to your innate Wholeness, and may you always know the magic you carry within.
